Norman Penny from York, England

Date: 1066 - 1087

Materials: Silver

Origin: York, England

Diameter: 18 mm

Accession No: 1993C540

This silver penny of William I, the Conqueror (1066-1087) was minted at York by a moneyer called Leysingr, a Scandinavian name. York had been heavily settled by Vikings 200 years earlier and
Scandinavian traditions remained strong there. When he conquered England William continued minting the same kind of coins that the Saxon kings had made.
