The Tokugawa Shoguns of Japan (1599-1867) issued gold coins that were the same shape as the gold ingots that had circulated in Japan in the Middle Ages. These flat, oval plates of gold were stamped with punches on both sides and also inscribed in Indian ink with their value and with the signature of the mint superintendent.
