Social scientists have documented how ancient societies used to live; this included how they carried out exchanges of goods and services that were needed. This exchange system or bartering was common to man's early hunter gather societies.
It could be said that some of these items of currency used in these societies (beads, shells, salt and iron rods) had ceremonial value i.e. bride price.
As the items exchanged were measurable, acceptable and payable they had value and demonstrated how important the items were to societies.
Today we are still taking lessons from these societies by creating modern day bartering systems or community currencies : LETS (Local Exchange Trading Systems), Time dollar.
What types of unusual currency were there?
